Summary
On the Beyond the Couch podcast, ieso's Head of Clinical Strategy, Alyssa Dietz, PhD, discusses where AI adds value in mental health care and where human clinical judgment stays essential. AI performs well at skills training and in-the-moment support; clinicians handle nuance and complex cases. Safety requires continuous testing, not a one-time check. This clinician-led approach underpins Velora, ieso's evidence-based, AI-powered mental health platform.
Most people who need mental health support never get it. When they do, it rarely sticks to the evidence. That problem is what pulled Alyssa Dietz, PhD, ieso's Head of Clinical Strategy, out of academia and into building technology-enabled care.
Alyssa sat down with Dr. Ernest Wayde from Wayde AIΒ for an episode of the Beyond the Couch podcast. She got candid about where AI earns its place in mental health support, and where human clinical judgment stays non-negotiable.

A few themes stood out:
β
- AI is strong at skills training. Teaching a concept, building a practice plan, reinforcing it at 2 a.m. when no clinician is awake. Clinical judgment for the messy, human specifics is a different job, and it stays with people.
- Safety is a dial, not a switch. Early on, Velora's risk classifier was so sensitive it flagged "I was hopeless at surfing" as a crisis. Tuning that tension between caution and a usable experience took constant testing, both before, during, and after deployment.
- The subtle risks matter as much as the obvious ones. Beyond self-harm detection, Alyssa watches for AI that reinforces delusions or feeds avoidance behavior.
- Clinicians belong in the build. Full stop. Psychologists bring research, psychometrics, and a trained eye for how care can go wrong. At ieso, every prompt and safety system in Velora is reviewed and signed off by a clinician before release.
β
This is the thinking, expertise, and oversight that's built into the Velora Platform. It's evidence-based mental health support that empowers patients with personalized, in-the-moment support and extends care teams instead of replacing them.
